Beyond Badel - a/MAZE/D! Zagreb.
In the beginning of the 21st century, most western cities are reaching beyond their rigid urban structures to generate activity nodes that can transform a whole area and that can be part of the new system of multi nodal networks that the cities are becoming. The limits are being blurred if not physically at least in the use and in the activity offer. Nodes that no longer are aimed to the local neighborhood but to the whole city. Zagreb is missing this multi node network at the moment.
BADEL BLOCK / TAKING SHAPE
Turning the Badel Block into a city node with a dense multi program agenda while enhancing and re-connecting the existing neighboring urban spaces requires an intervention larger in scale than the surrounding blocks and also more accessible and flexible. The need for permeability and and public access is higher, so it is the need for a bigger presence in the urbanscape as well as a larger connected sequence of environments.
A large unitary linear element -keeping with the traditional perimeter block typology present on the surrounding plots - is yielded over the plot maximizing its length with a series of turns and bends that generate the public space and public interaction zones within the Badel Block in conjunction with the empty areas on the adjacent plots. To reassure its permeability and fluent pedestrian connections the elements is raised in the middle allowing the public plaza to spread underneath. When implementing the program into this initial shape and with the intention of allowing public access across the whole building the linear elements turns into a double “snake” that ramps from the ground in 2 opposite directions getting people into the in between space. The new city HUB.
