Competition for the urban-architectural concept design for the BADEL SITE redevelopment

Opis

Public urban space within the block
A fluid field emerges from the underlying matrix in a series of baby tower surrounding the cultural plaza around the existing destilery. The buildings step back making huge terraces . This allows the buildings to feel less massive on the street scale.
Public spaces as well as terraces are employed to bring social life back to the city.
For Badel block project we want to bring a new life to the area by creating a development which is turned inside out.
Rather than making a simple block with all the life on the exterior, we have made a project which is defined by fragmentation and accessibility of block.
Both urban typologies are used in the project (block and individual buildings), integrated into a new urban pattern emphasizing both the closed quality of the peripheral block with its clear courtyard form and the individuality of the single buildings as elements, i.e. varying buildings adjacent to one another. The individual form of each building remains recognizable and nameable within the urban architectural framework.
Within the block structure a series of open public spaces are made.
In order to activate the ground throughout the whole site and provide quality public space most of the shops, caffe bars and restaurants are organised on ground floor, with various points of interest such as the cultural centre with its museum shop and further public attractors (e. g. conference space and event halls).
The Museum Square
We propose to give the former destilery a museum function. That function attracts people and business to regenerate the urban flow and traffic to this part of the city.
Around the destilery building, a urban plaza will be made, an open urban room under the sky. This square will be the heart of the project. The passerby is in an outside space; nonetheless, in the middle of an urban room.
A FLEXIBLE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY
We propose a new development on the site based on sustainable ecological principles.
In order to accommodate a flexible development strategy, a grid structure has been used as design instrument.
The ground floors have all been made as flexible as possible so that they can shift between retail functions.
Through a fragmentation we open up possibilitie of project realization in a number of stages.
The shaping of the volumes brings light in between the streets and to the solar facades, but it also gives houses individual character.
